The Problem with L-Ascorbic Acid
L-Ascorbic Acid (LAA) is the purest, most researched form of Vitamin C. It’s also the most unstable. Exposed to air, light, or heat, it oxidizes — visibly turning orange or brown in the bottle. An oxidized Vitamin C serum doesn’t just stop working. It can generate free radicals, doing the opposite of what you applied it for.
There’s also the pH issue. For LAA to absorb effectively, a formula needs to sit below pH 3.5. At that acidity, it stings — especially on sensitive or compromised skin. This doesn’t mean LAA is a bad ingredient. It means most products that use it have a stability problem they’re not advertising.

The Alternative: Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP)
SAP is a phosphate ester of Vitamin C — a derivative designed for stability. It doesn’t oxidize the same way LAA does. It remains effective across a wider pH range, which means it can be formulated alongside ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid without compromising any of them.
Once applied, SAP converts to active Vitamin C within the skin. In practice, a 10% SAP formula applied twice daily delivers consistent, cumulative results — while a 15% LAA serum that’s been sitting in a bottle for six weeks may have lost significant potency.

What to Look for on a Vitamin C Serum Label
Check the INCI ingredient list for the specific form — not just “Vitamin C”:
- Ascorbic Acid — L-Ascorbic Acid. Effective if fresh and well-formulated, unstable if not.
- Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate — SAP. Stable, skin-friendly pH, converts to active Vitamin C in skin.
- Ascorbyl Glucoside — Another stable derivative, gentler, slightly lower efficacy than SAP.
- Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate — Oil-soluble, stable, well-tolerated.
The one to avoid: an LAA serum with no airless or opaque packaging — that’s a product that may not survive long enough to work.

How do I know if my Vitamin C serum has oxidized?
Check the color. A fresh L-Ascorbic Acid serum is typically clear to pale yellow. If it has darkened to orange or brown, it has oxidized and lost potency — discontinue use. SAP-based formulas are far more resistant to this kind of visible degradation.
Does the percentage on the label still matter?
It matters less than the form. A 15% L-Ascorbic Acid serum that has partially oxidized may deliver less active Vitamin C than a well-formulated 10% SAP serum applied fresh. Form and stability determine what actually reaches your skin.
