Ceramide 3 (Ceramide NP) is one of nine ceramide subtypes found naturally in human skin. It is the most abundant ceramide in the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the epidermis that serves as your primary barrier against the outside world. Ceramides make up approximately 50% of the lipid content of this barrier, forming the ‘mortar’ in the brick-and-mortar structure where corneocytes (dead skin cells) are the bricks and ceramide-rich lipid bilayers are the mortar holding everything together.
When applied topically, Ceramide 3 integrates directly into the existing lipid bilayer structure of the stratum corneum — it doesn’t sit on top, it becomes part of the barrier. It fills gaps between corneocytes where natural ceramides have been depleted by aging, UV exposure, harsh cleansing, or environmental stress. Once integrated, it restores the organized lamellar (layered) structure that gives the barrier its impermeability.
