Chamomile

Ancient calming power backed by modern anti-inflammatory science

Calms

Chamazulene and apigenin reduce inflammation and redness at the cellular level.

Heals

Accelerates wound healing and tissue repair through flavonoid activity.

Defends

Antioxidant flavonoids neutralize environmental stress before it damages skin.

What it is

Chamomile Extract (Matricaria Chamomilla) is one of the oldest and most widely used medicinal plants in human history — documented in Egyptian, Greek, and Roman pharmacopeias over 5,000 years. The extract contains a complex of active compounds: chamazulene (a powerful blue-colored anti-inflammatory formed during steam distillation), apigenin (a flavonoid that binds to benzodiazepine receptors for calming), bisabolol, and a spectrum of flavonoids and terpenoids that together create one of nature’s most comprehensive skin-calming systems.

How it works

Chamomile calms skin through multiple parallel pathways — which is why it outperforms single-compound anti-inflammatories. Chamazulene inhibits leukotriene synthesis and 5-lipoxygenase activity, blocking inflammatory cascades at their origin. Apigenin reduces histamine release and suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Bisabolol enhances penetration of these compounds and adds its own anti-inflammatory action. The flavonoid complex scavenges free radicals, preventing oxidative damage that triggers further inflammation. Together, these mechanisms create layered, sustained calming — not just a temporary reduction in redness.

Chamomile Extract in Our Formulations

Chamomile skincare has 5,000 years of documented use for a reason — no other botanical matches its multi-pathway calming power. For chamomile for sensitive skin, the matricaria chamomilla extract delivers chamazulene benefits that single-compound actives can’t replicate: chamomile anti-inflammatory action across leukotrienes, histamine, and cytokine pathways simultaneously. As a chamomile soothing serum ingredient, chamomile extract for face provides chamomile redness relief that’s sustained, not temporary — because it blocks inflammation at its source, not just its symptoms. Combined with Bisabolol (chamomile’s own star compound isolated for targeted delivery), Aloe Vera for hydrating calm, and Oat Extract for beta-glucan barrier protection. Supported by Panthenol for accelerated repair and Hyaluronic Acid for deep moisture — all on a Ceramide 3 foundation. Explore the full formulation in The Serum C+E on Amazon.

Why we chose it

Single-compound calming agents suppress one pathway. Chamomile suppresses all of them simultaneously — chamazulene blocks leukotrienes, apigenin blocks histamine, bisabolol blocks cytokines, and flavonoids neutralize the free radicals driving the whole cycle. Paired with Ceramide 3, chamomile creates a formulation where the barrier is reinforced and the inflammatory response is managed from every angle. For sensitive, reactive, or barrier-compromised skin, this multi-target approach is essential.
