Salicylic Acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) originally derived from willow bark. Unlike alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) that work only on the skin surface, BHA is oil-soluble — meaning it penetrates into pores and dissolves the sebum and dead cell buildup that causes blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammatory acne.
Because salicylic acid is lipophilic (fat-loving), it can dissolve in sebum and penetrate inside the pore lining. Once inside, it breaks the bonds holding dead keratinocytes together (desmolysis), loosening the plug of dead cells and oil that clogs the pore. It also has direct anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the redness and swelling associated with acne lesions.
